The big decision has been made. You are going to sell your house. You are almost ready for those all-important photos that will go on the internet for everyone to see. The furniture is in place. The rooms look balanced and decluttered. The closets are the best they have ever been. Now here are a few numbers to finish it all up with style.
Art:
1. Rule of thumb is hang art work 60 inches from the middle of the piece to the floor
2. Leave 2-3 inches between pieces of art in a grouping
3. 2/3 of the width of a piece of furniture is the maximum for art hanging above. So if the sofa is 6
feet long, the maximum width of the art would be 4 feet.
4. 5 – 9 inches from the bottom of the art to the top of the furniture
Drapes:
1. Place the drapery rod bracket 4 – 8 inches above the top of the window casing and 4 – 10 inches
wider than the sides of the window casing. Now, when the drape is open it will stack on the wall,
letting in more light and make the window look larger.
2. Drapes should go to the floor. They can even pool on the floor by 2 inches or so. Let those
drapes hang straight down. Beautiful!
Chandeliers:
1. When the chandelier is above a dining table there should be about 30 inches from the bottom of
the chandelier to the table top.
Area rugs:
1. When under a dining table, the chairs should still be on the rug when you are sitting on them.
About 30 inches beyond the table should do it.
2. When the rug is under a bed it should be about 18 -24 inches wider than the bed.
3. Area rugs should show at least 12 – 18 inches of bare floor around the room.
One, two, three, you are ready for those photos. Smile!
